My dream of becoming an OT (occupational therapist) is so close. I graduate with my Bachelors of Science in Psychology in June, 2017. About 2 months before I graduate with my Bachelors, I will start applying to graduate school. Graduate school has a lot of requirements and prerequisites that you need to obtain before applying. One of the 3 schools I will be applying to is Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. I chose this school to apply to because it is close to where I live and I will fit into all the requirements when I graduate with my undergrad. When looking at this school I looked at the school’s general requirements, class profile, fieldwork placements, and the national certification exam scores. Midwestern University has a class size of 40 with the average GPA of 3.59. My thoughts on this will be that I need to work on my GPA, because it is one of the most important parts of getting in. To apply to this OT school, any OT school for that matter, you need the following courses: Human Anatomy- 4 credits Human Physiology- 4 credits Statistics- 4 credits Human Development- 4 credits Abnormal Psychology- 4 credits Social and Behavioral Sciences- 4 credits Bachelor’s degree Additional courses in the sciences and mathematics are also recommended, including chemistry, physiology, physics, and biology. Another requirement before applying to OT school is first aid and CPR certifications within 3 years of application. You also need to have experience with community service, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, motivation for the health care field, communication skills, and pass a background check. Once you have all these courses completed, all the requirements, along with your Bachelor’s degree, you are ready to apply to OT school! Once applied, you will be invited to complete an on campus interview process. This is what I am most nervous about! You need to demonstrate your skills in: Academic achievement Oral and written communication skills Articulation of the domain and scope of OT practice Community service Leadership in extracurricular or other activities I will definitely have to practice my interview skills and think of different ideas and examples I can use for these 5 topics. Are they more or less extensive than OT school? I would love to hear from everyone and their graduate school admissions process experience!
